Due to
the First World War in the United States and Europe, studies were
initiated with different kinds of gelatins. The Gelatin Nutrition
and Medicine book contains the following information in relation
to the colitical origin of the arthritis:
1) It is
mentioned a work of A.
Almerini published in Art Di Ortop in 1907, which is based
in the work of Silvia and Colla. In this work it's stated that the
gelatin stimulates the bone’s generative activity, It was also
observed an increase in the calcium and nitrogen fixation in the
bones with the ingestion of gelatin.
2) Also the
work of E. Cohn Die Therape D.
1905 is mentioned. This work concludes that due to the
colloidal character of the gelatin, it recovers the mucous of the
intestinal region and protects it, also reporting good results in
the treatment of hyperacidity for protection against ulcers. He
also showed himself impressed with the results obtained with
gelatin in the cure of colitis.
In the same
way it is mentioned the simplicity whereupon the gelatin is
absorbed without causing upsets. Its excess can be eliminated
easily instead of fermenting causing annoying gases.
R. Hutchison
mentions the gelatin’s simplicity to fixate great amounts of acid
in the digestive process, being useful in the treatment of hyper
secretion of stomach acid.
Rechhold
and recently Mc. Clendon the same as Mitchell
include the gelatin in the list of food recommended for colitis
and gastric ulcers.
In the same
sense there are Schaps’s works, moreover he experimented
successfully with gelatin in the treatment of pylorus spasms,
treating the vomits produced by pyloric stenosis.
Works like
A. F. R. Andersen-Am’s J.
Digest Diste & Nutr in 1937 mention the favorable effects
of the gelatin in the digestion of the superior intestinal region,
providing improvements to patients that suffer spasmic colitis.
It also
recommends diets based in the gelatin’s hydro colloidal to help
the slow digestion, forming of gases, acidity and upsets that
affect the heart, lungs, gall bladder and appendix.
Potternger recommends in his work
F. M. Jr-en Am J. Digest
1938, suggest the use of gelatin to relief gastritis,
explaining this relief partly to a certain nervous relax.
Consequence of a better digestion and this is a very important
conclusion, because in great extent the joint discomfort generated
by the arthritis is due to a kind of stress caused by a bad
digestion or intestinal upsets.
Many
studies have been made in relation to gelatin according to the
book Gelatin in Nutrition and Medicine published by
Grayslake Gelatin Co.
A
compilation of many of these works published until 1945.
There exist works such as
Stone and Abeles and Baker with reference to the treatment
of a muscular (diasthropy), which recommend the use of gelatin for
hair, nails and for stopping the damage in cartilages.

Twenty
years from now when it was seen the seriousness of the symptoms of
arthritis and osteoporosis had in society, investigation works
generated in Germany, France and the United States were taken into
account. Such is the case of:

In the book Arthritis and Allied
Conditions, a textbook of rheumatology Mc. Caty and
Daniel 1979. The colitis is related as an originator of arthritic
manifestations in the joints.
In the collagen oral article for rheumatoid
arthritis from the Medical Sciences Bulletin Published
by Pharmaceutical Information Associates Ltd, the arthritis
characterized by the inflammation of the synovial membrane is
described. This arthritis damages cartilages and bones. This
disease is considered like the autoimmune origin due to the
ingestion of a strange protein in the organism which generates
autoimmunity that degrades bones and cartilages. In this work
the use of (gelatin) collagen was successful as an auto antigen
against the autoimmune attack.

It’s interesting to point out that in
investigations even presented in ancient times
like in modern times the use of gelatin in
arthritic treatments due to:
|
|
1- The
cartilages and bones affected by the arthritis are structured by
collagen and as the gelatin is a hydrolyzed soluble collagen, easy
to absorb, it’s a good vehicle for nutrients and minerals.
Specially the calcium, which contributes to the generative action
of bones and strengthen of the cartilages.
2-
Due to its colloidal action
the gelatin helps the treatment of colitic upsets, gastritis,
hyperacidity. It also makes an easier digestion, relieving factors
that influence the arthritis and nervous alterations.
.
Since
ten years ago it has been sold in Europe, the United States and
now in Mexico. In Mexico great amounts of products based on
different kinds of gelatin announce in many ways their benefits in
osteoporosis, arthritis and spasmodic colitis as well as the
traditional in hair and nails.
